T1 Internet Service

Internet T-1 is a fast, reliable dedicated online service for businesses, schools, housing projects or apartment buildings.

By: John Shepler

Why order T1 Internet service?
T1 is an established professional grade of Internet line service. It is always on and may be shared by everyone in the same office or within a school, housing development or apartment building. It runs at 1.544 Mbps, fast enough for 25 or so simultaneous users. T1 is what is called a dedicated service. It is 100% dedicated to whomever buys the service. It can also be provisioned with a service level agreement that guarantees the reliability of your Internet service.

How Does T1 Compare to Other Internet Service Options?
Dial-up Internet service is appropriate for individuals who spend a few hours or less online each day and don't mind waiting for their modem to dial in when they want to use the Internet. Dial-up also makes sense for business travelers and remote workers, especially anyone traveling overseas.

ADSL & Cable Modem services are considered consumer broadband services. They run at much higher line speeds than dial-up, but are subject to unexpected outages, sometimes for hours at a time. These are also "shared" services. The available bandwidth is shared among the number of users online at a particular time. If you are the only one using the service in the wee hours of the morning, you'll get excellent download times. During peak hours, you may get the impression that the Internet is bogging down. Actually, it is only your shared connection that is clogged.

T1 lines use an standard developed for the telephone companies and can be provisioned over fiber optic cables or two pair of ordinary telephone wires. T1 service is often available in rural and urban areas that are not serviced by DSL or Cable.

Do You Want to Run Your Own Server?
If you want to run your own private email or web server, T1 is an excellent option. Both upload and download speeds are 1.544 Mbps. Other services put severe limitations on your upload speed, which is what people accessing your servers experience. With T1 Internet, you have the line dedicated to your applications and one or more static IP addresses for your servers. Many small, medium and even large businesses use T1 lines to provide email and web browsing services for their employees, while operating their web and email servers on the same line at the same time.

How Does T1 Internet Work for Apartments & Housing Projects?
The owner of the building or the homeowner's association buys T1 line service, plus a router with a T1 interface, and other networking supplies. Each apartment or home is wired for an Ethernet connection to the Internet router. The building or development office will also have a business grade Internet connection available as one of the users. Costs can be shared among those using the service. With as few as 15 or 20 people connected, the cost of shared T1 Internet service can be competitive with other broadband services.

All of the Internet connections are always on and connect to the network port of a personal computer or in-home wireless network. The bandwidth is shared among the residents who are online. If the project grows larger in scope, additional T1 lines can be "bonded" to give 2 to 6 times the capacity of a single T1 Internet service.

How About Ethernet?
Carrier Ethernet directly competes with T1 and is available with both copper and fiber optic delivery. Bandwidths range from 2 or 3 Mbps on the low end up to 10 Gbps and beyond. Pricing per Mbps is more attractive than T1 lines.
